The Love of God!

I heard this song for the first time when David was just a baby. We were living in Winona Lake, IN, and it quickly became my all time favorite hymn! The words are just incredible! It was written by Frederick M Lehman in 1917 in Pasadena, CA. I find it amazing that many hymnals do not include this one!
There were two books by John Fisher that David and I read together when he was in 5th or 6th grade~~ Saint Ben & Saints' and Angels' Song. The 2nd one uses the words to this hymn as its basis.
Bob has been instructed that at my funeral ALL three verses are to be sung! Since I don't know how soon I'll be going to heaven, why not take time right now to read~~I mean really read~~not just skim the words, as in "Oh yeah, I know this one already~~but let the words and their message sink in.

The Love of God
The love of God is greater far
than tongue or pen can ever tell;
it goes beyond the highest star;
and reaches to the lowest hell.
The guilty pair, bowed down with care,
God gave His Son to win
His erring child He reconciled,
and pardoned from his sin.
O Love of God, how rich and pure!
How measureless and strong!
It shall forevermore endure:
The saints' and angels' song!
When years of time shall pass away,
and earthly thrones and kingdoms fall,
When men, who here refuse to pray,
on rocks and hills and mountains call,
God's love so sure, shall still endure,
all measureless and strong;
redeeming grace to Adam's race -
the saints' and angels' song.
O Love of God, how rich and pure!
How measureless and strong!
It shall forevermore endure:
The saints' and angels' song.
Could we with ink the ocean fill,
and were the skies of parchment made,
Were every stalk on earth a quill,
and every man a scribe by trade,
to write the love of God above
would drain the ocean dry.
Nor could the scroll contain the whole,
though stretched from sky to sky.
O Love of God, how rich and pure!
How measureless and strong!
It shall forevermore endure:
The saints' and angels' song.

  3. Ditto - LOVE this song. I was just humming it to myself the other day and wondering what some of the words were beyond the first verse and chorus, so . . . thanks for posting them!

  4. Wow! I haven't heard that one in a while. Me and my mom used to sing a duet with that song.
